Library Cards
A valid library card is required to access many library services including, but not limited, to:
- Borrowing and renewing library materials
- Placing, picking up and canceling holds
- Accessing personal account information
- Requesting items on interlibrary loan
- Using in-house public computers
- Accessing many online databases remotely
Customers must present their Oakville Public Library card, or register their Halton public library card (Burlington, Halton Hills or Milton) in the Oakville database to access these services. Students at White Oaks Secondary School are registered using their student card numbers.
To register for an Oakville Public Library card, acceptable identification showing the individual's name and current address must be presented to staff. Teens may use their school student card as identification. Children (12 years and under) must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.
The first library card is free to all users. Non residents may obtain a card at no cost. A nominal fee is charged for replacement cards. Damaged or worn out cards will be replaced at no cost.
Acceptable current identification may be presented in lieu of a library card.
Guest passes that allow online access may be issued at the discretion of staff.
Cardholders are responsible for all library materials borrowed on their cards. Lost or stolen cards must be reported to library staff immediately.
A customer's borrowing privileges will be suspended if charges exceed the current threshold as set by Oakville Public Library or if the cardholder is banned from all library branches.
