Creating Opportunities For Newcomers

Oakville Public Library reaches out by offering many services for newcomers to Canada. 2009 saw the start of some programs offered in partnership with other multicultural organizations increasing the opportunities for newcomers to access our library services.

In addition to our Welcome to Canada areas located at each branch, equipped with useful information for newcomers,

the library also offers programs such as Newcomers Introduction to Basic Computers and Citizenship Orientation which are delivered by Halton Multicultural Council (HMC) in the library. A Newcomers Conversation Network in partnership with The Centre for Skills Development & Training takes place in a relaxed setting where newcomers can use this time to improve their English language skills and develop

greater ties to their new community. A HMC Settlement Worker is available once a week to assist with information on immigration, translation, social services and more, at the Glen Abbey library branch.

We also offer Outreach Children's programming at many drop-in and community centres around town bringing the library right to busy parents and caregivers!
