Registration for spring / summer 2012 programs will be begin on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Our program guide will be in branches and online some time the week of January 16, 2012. In most cases, programs are registered through IRIS.

Teen programs, newcomer programs and some special events may have alternate methods and/or deadlines for registration or ticket purchase.

Build Your Career in Canada

This session will present job search strategies and useful tips for newcomers. Topics will include identifying and overcoming barriers to employment, assessing marketability skills, understanding the Canadian workplace culture , as well as identifying useful resources and services in the community.

Book a Tech Coach

Team up with a volunteer tech coach for one-on-one technology help and training. This program is for beginner users. Topics covered in hour-long sessions, starting again in January 2012 will include:

Basic web browsing
Getting started with Windows
E-mail/Manage your mail
Audiobooks and eBooks at the Library
Learn about Facebook, Twitter or YouTube
Manage, edit and share digital photos online

Short Story Writing Workshop

Workshop an original short story over the course of 6 weeks, in a positive, small group environment. Writing exercises to spark ideas for new stories will also be incorporated. Instructor Larry Brown has studied fiction writing at the University of Iowa Summer Writing Workshop and the Humber School for Writers in Toronto.

Ages: 19+
Begins Wednesday, April 4, 2012 and runs weekly for six weeks, 6:00pm-8:30pm

Ten copies of the complete first draft of your story should be brought to the first session for distribution to other participants. Participants are responsible for their own photocopying. Stories must be typewritten and double-spaced. Stories longer than fifteen double-spaced pages, novel excerpts, or non-fiction pieces will not be accepted.

The first session will serve as a general introduction to the course as well as an opportunity for participants to distribute their stories. Changes to stories will not be permitted after this time. Participants will read the stories of others outside class time.

By having their stories read and commented on, and critiquing the work of others, participants will gain a better understanding of how the short story works, and of how they can apply this understanding to their own writing.
