Early Literacy

Start Early! Learning starts at birth.

Research shows that children learn the skills they need to read years before they start school.

Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually read and write.

There are 6 pre-reading skills that children must know in order to learn to read successfully.

Research shows that children who haven't experienced or explored these early literacy skills at a young age will have far more difficulty learning to read when they do enter school.

Parents & Caregivers

Parents and caregivers play an important role in helping children get ready to read. Your children learn best by doing things and they love doing things with you! You know your child best. A free Every Child Ready to Read Parent Guide is available at all Oakville Public Library branches and Book Nooks.
