Tips
- Begin reading books early – even when your child is a newborn.
- Talk to your child about what you are doing.
- Tell your child stories.
- Encourage your child to tell you about things. Listen patiently and ask questions.
- Play with alphabet letters; make letters with clay or use magnetic letters on the fridge.
- Point to letters of the alphabet or words as you say them.
- Let your child hold the book and read or tell you the story.
- Emphasize rhyming words in nursery rhymes, stories and songs.
