New branch hours

On October 26, 2017, the Oakville Public Library (OPL) Board of Directors supported a recommendation to reorganize the operational hours of all OPL branches. The proposed change to hours comes after an extensive analysis of data confirmed a significant and increasing demand for service in OPL’s northern branches.

Why is the library changing its hours?

  • In an effort to serve all community residents purposefully – as outlined in the library’s 2016-19 Strategic Plan – the library will increase its operational hours for customers to benefit from additional service throughout the year

What information was used to make a decision?

  • Data on branch traffic and item circulation was collected and analyzed using the library’s new RFID technology, in addition to analytics on program attendance
  • The data collected from these sources confirmed that, together, the library’s northern branches accounted for 55 per cent of the library’s total amount of customer visits and 52 per cent of its overall circulation
  • At the same time OPL’s southern branches experience slower periods of time

Which branches will be affected?

  • All OPL branches will run on slightly altered schedules, which will transition throughout the summer months

How will the change in hours affect me?

  • By increasing its overall hours, library customers will be able to stay in our branches, as well as utilize library services and resources, for longer periods of time
  • The change of hours will also be transitioned through the summer, eliminating the library’s previous summer schedule, providing customers with more access to library services
  • In addition, an increase of hours provides the library with the ability to run more programs

How will the change in hours affect OPL staff?

  • The library’s management team is currently developing schedules in line with the new service hours
  • OPL guarantees that all staff will maintain their current number of working hours, but slight changes in schedule, such as time of day or location, may occur
  • Upon initial review, staff were presented with the opportunity to suggest changes in hours to their managers

When will the new hours take effect?

  • The new library hours will take effect in the new year, beginning Tuesday, January 2, 2018
