Services you can access from home

Register for a library card

If you live, work or study in Oakville and don’t have an OPL library card, you can register for a library card via email or phone, so you can still access our digital collections from the comfort of your own home.*

Select one option:

  • Send us an email at oplreference@oakville.caand include “Card Registration” in the subject line; or
  • Call us at 905-815-2039 and leave a voicemail with your card registration request, including your name and phone number.

Please allow 48 hours to process your registration.

*Currently, this library card provides access to OPL’s digital collections. Full-access cards are available in-branch.

Stories by Phone

It’s now even easier to enjoy stories at home! A friendly OPL staff member has pre-recorded a Stories by Phone option for you. Dial 905-815-2041 and choose any option and – once or as many times as you like! You will be greeted by a friendly voice and a story ready for you! Categories include sonnets and children’s bedtime stories (age 7 and under), both categories offering new options every Tuesday. The third category available is listening to an adult cozy mystery which will have new additions everyday from Monday to Friday. Pick one or play them all, as many times as you like. Long-distance charges may apply.

Staff Picks: Book recommendations on YouTube

Missing our in-branch book recommendations? OPL staff have you covered with digital book recommendations to help all ages find their next great read! Mondays will feature Children, Preschool and School-Age titles. Wednesdays will feature Teen & Young Adult titles. Fridays will feature Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction titles. Book of the Day Staff Book Reviews

Looking for a new book to dive into? Each week an OPL Team Member selects our OPL Book of the Day which we promote on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Be sure to follow our social media channels to see a quick synopsis of each book, and a direct link to reserve a copy at OPL. Coming soon: OPL Book of the Day reading list, a summary of all our Book of the Days over the last 3 months.

  • How To Access Digital Resources – Watch our video on how to use the library’s digital resources.
  • Tech Help– Book time with an OPL staff member to get help over the phone to access the library’s resources or very basic computer help.

Services available by appointment only

Library Takeout

Library Takeout is a contactless hold pickup service available by appointment. Place your holds online or by calling a branch. Once you receive confirmation that your library hold is ready, you can book an appointment. Holds will not be available for pickup without a scheduled appointment. More details here

Connection Kits

Connection Kits help Oakville residents who are 55+ have access to the internet and technology that allow them to stay connected with friends and family and to access alternate formats of reading material for those with print disabilities. Grab and Go Bags

Discover new authors, reads and movies with our Grab and Go bags. Order your bag in a seamless three-step process. Available by contactless, by appointment pickup. OPL staff prepare bags with 5 books or 5 DVDs based on the following categories:

  • For Kids: Picture Books, Early Readers, First Chapter and Junior Fiction
  • For Adults: Mystery & Suspense, Historical Fiction, Biographies, Lighthearted Reads, Wellness and Mixed Bag
  • DVDs: Award-winning Films, Recently Released Films, Family Films, TV Series and Mixed Documentaries

OPL Picks for You

OPL Picks for You is a personalized book-matching service. You share your reading interests and OPL staff will expertly choose the best reading materials for you. Fill in a short survey of what types of fiction/non-fiction books you would enjoy, then choose between contactless, by appointment pickup at your local branch or opt for the mail delivery option (*conditions and eligibility requirements apply). Public Computer Access and Related Services

All Oakville Public Library branches are equipped with public access computers. All PACs offer internet and e-mail access, word processing and printing. Computer services use is by appointment only. A library card is required to log in to the PACs. If you are not an Oakville resident, please see staff to obtain a temporary guest pass. Other services available

Food Shelf

Located just inside the 3rd floor entrance of the Central Branch, you will find the community food shelf stocked with non-perishable food, a fresh food fridge, pet food and hygiene items. Learn more about our community food shelf here.

OPL Express

Designed with busy customers in mind, OPL Express locations make it easy to pick-up holds, return library items and browse collections on-the-go at several high-traffic community buildings throughout Oakville. OPL Express locations are not staffed. Learn more about OPL Express here.

Conservation Halton and Provincial Park Passes

OPL now offers two types of loanable park passes to help you enjoy the outdoors. Passes will have a 7 day loan period (subject to change), unavailable for holds or renewal. Each branch has a limited number of passes, first come, first served. Limit to one pass per teen/adult library account user. The two types of park passes available are:

  • Conservation Halton Parks Family Pass ($135.50 value)
  • Ontario Parks Day Pass Permit ($255 value)

Winter Sports Kits

Get some fresh air and enjoy the snow using an OPL Winter Sport Kit. Kits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, no holds will be available. Loan periods are 7 days and are not renewable. There are various types of Winter Sports Kits and availability varies by branch, please call your local branch for more information.

Virtual Programs

OPL is offering a wide variety of virtual programs, from live Family Storytime, to technology based Lunch & Learns where you can learn a new skill. For a list of the Virtual Programs we are offering based on age group, visit our programs page.

Online Learning

With your library card you have access to many online learning platforms that can assist with all age groups. Discover new languages, explore new e-books and encyclopedias and do so from the comfort of your home. For more information on our learning platforms, visit our Learning with OPL page.
