Virtual Library Programs and Public Services

Here’s a quick guide to all of the library services that we are currently offering. For more information on our virtual programs, please visit our programs page.

Register for a library card

If you live, work or study in Oakville and don’t have an OPL library card, you can register for a library card via email or phone, so you can still access our digital collections from the comfort of your own home.*

Select one option:

  • Send us an email at oplreference@oakville.ca and include “Card Registration” in the subject line; or
  • Call us at 905-815-2039 and leave a voicemail with your card registration request, including your name and phone number.

Please allow 48 hours to process your registration.

*Currently, this library card provides access to OPL’s digital collections. Once the library resumes regular operations, we can provide you with a full-access library card.

New Program: Grab & Go for Kids

OPL has launched a new service to help you discover new authors and reads in a seamless 3 step process. Branch staff will prepare bags with 5 books inside based on the following categories: Picture Books, Early Readers, First Chapter and Junior Fiction.

Pick up a bag of your preferred category, and make sure to keep your bag sealed until you get home. Place your bag on the self-checkout scanner and use your library card to check out the materials, then take home to uncover new reads! Happy discovering!

Reader Services

  • Stories by Phone –  Do you or someone you know want to hear a friendly voice? Are you more comfortable using the telephone than technology? You can now dial 905-815-2041 to enjoy pre-recorded stories, any time of day. We are offering three different pre-recorded story options in English: poems and short stories for adults, stories for younger children (age 7 and under) and adult fiction (one chapter a week). Pick one or play them all, as many times as you like. New stories are available every Tuesday. Long-distance charges may apply.
  • Staff Picks: Book Recommendations – Missing our in-branch book recommendations? OPL staff have you covered with digital book recommendations to help all ages find their next great read! Mondays will feature Children, Preschool and School-Age titles. Wednesdays will feature Teen & Young Adult titles. Fridays will feature Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction titles. Listen to the series now on YouTube.

Technology Help

  • How To Access Digital Resources – Watch our video on how to use the library’s digital resources.
  • Tech Help – Book time with an OPL staff member to get help over the phone to access the library’s resources or very basic computer help.

Virtual Programs

OPL is offering a wide variety of virtual programs, from live Family Storytime, to technology based Lunch & Learns where you can learn a new skill. For a list of the Virtual Programs we are offering based on age group, visit our programs page.

Online Learning

With your library card you have access to many online learning platforms, that can assist with all age groups. Discover new languages, explore new e-books and encyclopedias and do so from the comfort of your home. For more information on our learning platforms, visit our Learning with OPL page.
