OPL Express: Browse & Borrow

What is OPL Express Browse & Borrow?  

Browse & Borrow is a new service as part of OPL Express. It’s a self-serve kiosk where you can easily check-out library books on-the-go. These kiosks are available at St. Luke’s Community Centre and Queen Elizabeth Park  Community and Cultural Centre. How is this different than the other OPL Express units, like the one at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex?

OPL Express offers two types of services: A holds locker where you can redirect holds to be picked up at one of three OPL Express locations. These differ from Browse & Borrow kiosks as they are for library holds you place through our online catalogue.

Are the Browse & Borrow collections the same loan period as other Oakville Public Library collections?

Yes, items checked out from the Browse & Borrow kiosks contain both adult and children’s books  that are loanable for three weeks at a time and subject to the same borrowing and renewal policies as other OPL materials.

How do I keep myself safe when using the Browse & Borrow Kiosk during the COVID pandemic?

Hand sanitizer is available onsite at all OPL Express locations. We ask that you sanitize or wash your hands before and after using the OPL Express. Please note that the touchscreens on the OPL Express units will not be sanitized after each use, only periodically. Please do not attempt to clean the touchscreens yourself.

Will I be able to use the Browse & Borrow kiosk if my card has fines or lost items on it?

No, if there are library fines on your account that exceed $25 dollars or more. While OPL has permanently eliminated overdue fines on library materials, to ensure borrowed items are still returned in a timely fashion OPL has implemented a limit of two overdue items per account. Library accounts with more than two overdue library items will be prevented from borrowing more physical library materials until the overdue materials are renewed or returned – including those in Browse & Borrow kiosks.

Library privileges will be suspended if fees exceed $25 or more due to library hold expiry fees for holds not picked up and lost or damaged materials. To regain card privileges speak to an OPL staff member at one of our 7 branches or contact oplreference@oakville.ca.

Can I get a library card at the OPL Express location?

No, library cards can only be obtained by visiting one of our 7 branches.

Can I use the Browse & Borrow kiosk if I don’t have my physical library card with me?

Yes, you are able to scan the library barcode from the My OPL mobile app on your mobile device or manually enter it on the touchscreen. You will be asked to enter your library pin number to verify your account. The process is similar to the self-service checkout kiosks within our branches.

Am I able to get a paper receipt at the OPL Express kiosk for my checkout transaction?

At this time we have purposely deactivated the paper receipt feature in order to eliminate a touch point for customers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Customers can also check their accounts for due date information in the My OPL mobile app, by visiting the website at opl.ca and logging with their username and password or by calling one of the 7 branches.

As I was checking out materials at the Browse & Borrow kiosk, the kiosk became “Out of Order.” Are the items checked out on my card?

Yes, you should see the library materials on your library account at a later time after the kiosk has become operational again. Should you not see the items borrowed on your account after a few days, please contact Woodside Library at 905-815-2036 if you used the Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre OPL Express location or Glen Abbey Branch at 905-815-2039 if you used the St. Luke’s Community Centre OPL Express location.

Will I have to complete a health screening process when visiting an OPL Express location prior to using the services?

Yes, you will need to adhere to the current Health Screening procedures and practices in place at all OPL Express locations.

When returning materials to an OPL Express location, how long will it take for this to be reflected on my account? 

If you are returning materials to one of the OPL Express locations, please note returns may not be reflected on your count for up to one week.
