Spring 2020 Update

Our Seed Library is now available! There will be no formal check-out this year, simply stop by one of the two locations listed below to pick-up your seeds to plant at home. Seeds are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last. The full list of available seeds can be viewed below.

Pick-up Locations:

  • Seeds are available for pick-up on Wednesdays from 10:00am-2:00pm at the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre (2200 Sawgrass Dr, Oakville, ON L6H 7K3)
  • Seeds are available for pick-up at any time of day on the front porch of Film.ca Cinemas (171 Speers Rd Unit 25, Oakville, ON).

Customers who are unable to travel to the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre or Film.ca Cinemas can email Marcus Logan, Manager of Community Engagement, directly at marcus.logan@oakville.ca with their address and their seed selections. Maximum 5 seed packs per person for this option.

About the Seed Library

The OPL Seed Library is an educational project that provides customers with the opportunity to grow their own plants, harvest their own food, and participate in a community-wide sharing initiative.

The communal Seed Library offers a wide selection of seeds, which library customers can “borrow” free of charge. Customers are encouraged to plant the seeds in their personal gardens, nurture the plants as they grow, and, once mature, harvest the seeds to return to the library.

The simple cycle of borrowing, growing, harvesting, and returning seeds promotes a culture of sharing within our community and provides hands-on experiences that allow customers to better understand agriculture and sustainability.

Thank you to our donors

The OPL Seed Library was established in 2017 from a very generous donation made by avid Oakville Public Library supporters, Richard and Barbara Birkett. Mr. Birkett has been a long-time donor, was a former board member, and has volunteered with the library over the past 35 years.

OPL received its initial collection of seeds as a donation from Ball Seed, a Chicago-based company, and has also partnered with Oakvillegreen to help support the launch of the library.
