2018 Teen Photography Contest – Official Rules & Regulations

Contest Dates: Submissions will be accepted from Monday, July 2nd – Monday, September 3rd at 11: 59 pm.

Important note: ONLY electronic submissions will be accepted. All entrants must submit a fully completed photo consent form to be submitted in person at Awards Night in September.

Contest Theme: “Motion”

Two Age Categories*:

  • Grades 7-9
  • Grades 10-12

*Last completed grade as of September 3rd,  2018

Submission categories:

Category 1: Nature & the Environment

  • Animals, plants and landscapes
  • Locations, man-made environments (buildings) peoples or activities that convey a sense of place.
  • Individuals from all walks of life
  • Candid photos

Category 2: Enhanced photos

  • Altered Images: Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e. colorizing, toning, collage, etc.)
  • Staged photos

Category 3: Mobile device photos

Two prizes will be awarded to the best photographs submitted in Category 1 or 2 that were taken with a mobile device (smart phone or tablet).

Entry limit:
No more than two submissions will be accepted per student.

We will accept:

  • Any digital photo taken by a student in Gr. 7-12 who is either an Oakville resident or Oakville Public Library cardholder
  • Cropped photos
  • Minor adjustments made to photos (i.e sharpening, contrast and slight color adjustments)

What we cannot accept:

  • Photos taken over 2 years ago
  • Photographs that have won* other contests (*winning is defined as having won grand prize or winning 1st, 2nd or 3rd place overall)
  • Photos that violate or infringe on another person’s rights, including (but not limited to) copyright. You must obtain written consent from the subject of your photo/story in order for it to be considered.
  • Photos that portray nudity or illegal activity
  • If it is determined that a photographer has significantly altered his or her photo, judges have the right to move it to the Enhanced Images category for judging
  • Images created solely on the computer do not qualify in any category
  • Immediate family members of OPL staff, board members and volunteers are ineligible due to the library’s Contests & Lotteries policy.


1. Nature & the Environment – 4 awards total

  • Best photo (Gr. 7-9) + runner up
  • Best photo (Gr. 10-12) + runner up

2. Enhanced Photos – 4 awards total

  • Best photo (Gr. 7-9) + runner up
  • Best photo (Gr. 10-12) + runner up

3. Mobile Devices – 2 awards total

  • Best photo taken on a smartphone/tablet in any category Gr. 7-9
  • Best photo taken on a smartphone/tablet in any category Gr. 10-12

4.People’s Choice Awards* – 2 awards total

  • Gr. 7-9 (either category)
  • Gr. 10-12 (either category)
