WiFi Hotspots Lending Program

Public libraries play a vital role in providing Internet access to their communities. To address the needs of those who do not have access to high-speed Internet services at home, Oakville Public Library has introduced a new Wi-Fi hotspot lending program which allows cardholders to borrow one of 30 portable Wi-Fi hotspots for up to one week at a time.

Who can borrow: Any adult cardholder (18 years of age and older) or who self-identifies as not having internet access at home.

Where will it work: Service is available across Canada within the Rogers cell phone coverage area. International service, including in the United States, is unavailable. Data is unlimited.

How to borrow: Visit one of our branches and speak to a staff member at the customer service desk. WiFi Hotspots are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be placed on hold. WiFi Hotspots can be borrowed for up to one week (7 days) at a time and cannot be renewed.

Where to return: WiFi Hotspots must be returned to an Oakville Public Library branch during operating hours and returned directly to a staff member, who will ensure all device pieces have been returned in good condition. The borrower may be asked to complete a post-loan survey.

Overdue and replacement fees: The overdue fine for WiFi Hotspots is $1.00/day. If the device becomes overdue, the library will disable it until it is returned. The replacement fee for WiFi Hotspots is $200 for a lost or damaged device; $15 for a lost or damaged cord or cover; and a $7 processing fee in addition to the replacement cost for any lost or damaged items.

Charging the WiFi Hotspot: In order to keep the WiFi Hotspots available to the public as often as possible, the library cannot ensure that they are fully charged upon check out. It is the responsibility of the customer to adequately charge the WiFi Hotspot for their own use by using the charging cable and instructions provided.

Privacy: Oakville Public Library does not monitor, collect, or store data about users’ internet activity. All users must abide by OPL’s Internet Access & Acceptable Use policy and understand there is no guarantee the hotspot WiFi connection will be entirely private.
