New Life

By Mikaela Brough

When you feel enclosed in your own mind
And your surroundings lose all colour
When your mind is tainted by the emptiness you feel
And your perception suddenly grows duller

When you see the way out through the Iron Gate
But still no one can hear your screams
When you sink down against the wall of graffiti
And disappear into your dreams

When you can't remember how you got trapped here And how you turned up in this pit When you see the world beyond, a vehicle waiting And there's nothing you can do but sit

When you accept that you will probably never escape
And very last trace of hope is gone
When the gate to freedom screeched open
And there's finally a way to go beyond

When you clamor hurriedly to your feet
And take your first steps outside
When you aboard your escape motorcycle
And decide to really take life for a ride

When you look back, all you remember is sadness
Before and while in the prison
But now you have courage, new confidence
And your new life of happiness has arisen
