[SLIDE 1] In this tutorial, we'll learn about the Content of the Halton Community Services Database.

[SLIDE 2] The online database includes approximately 4000 records pertaining to community, non-profit, and government agencies and services in the Halton Region. This includes Oakville, Milton, Burlington, & Halton Hills. This information is used by the public and many organizations locally and regionally

[SLIDE 3] So, what kinds of local services are collected for the Halton Community Services Database?

Our first priority is to collect information on basic needs services.

Examples of basic needs services are food banks, shelters, low-income housing assistance, child care, helplines, addiction services, health services including mental health.

Second priority services include community sports leagues, recreational groups and clubs, non-profit arts and cultural groups and educational institutions

[SLIDE 4] This information is published in topic-specific guides and shared out to local, regional, and provincial databases. Some of the partnerships we share data with are:

Local: Volunteer Halton and the Oakville Beaver Community Guide.

Regional: The Child Care Directory and Information Line, Halton Senior's Directory, our regional Community Care Access Centres, Region of Halton brochures such as 'Where to get food in Halton'.

Provincial: Ontario 211 Service, theHealthline.ca, Settlement.org, and others.

In addition, some commercial organizations are included to fill service gaps in the database.

[SLIDE 5] The services in the database must meet the guidelines set out in our inclusion policy:

Organizations or services must be located in Halton or provide a service in Halton. Providers must be a non-profit, government, or community based organization. Some commercial organizations are included to fill service gaps.

[SLIDE 6] Staff can log in to the database to access additional features such as the advanced search and a list of pre-set searches.

Google has indexed all public records in the HCSD. Try a Google search and add 'Hipinfo' at the end of your search term. Our database results appear at the top of the list with our URL below them.
